North Crawford Playhouse is thrilled to present William Shakespeare's timeless comedy, Much Ado About Nothing. With plenty of humor, a good dose of romance, and a hefty portion of mischief, this delightful production will leave audiences feeling happy and uplifted. Set against the backdrop of a picturesque villa in the Italian countryside, Much Ado About Nothing unfolds as two couples navigate the tumultuous waters of new love. Our play follows the dashing young Claudio (Blake Zirk) and lovely Hero (Lena Schmidt) as they fall in love and plan to be married. Meanwhile, the quick-witted Beatrice (Agnes Carstens) and acerbic Benedick (Nathan Zirk) are duped into a frantic romance, the former by her waiting women Margaret (Kaylee McBride) and Ursula (Chloe Kvigne), and the latter by Claudio, prince Don Pedro (Aiden Unseth), and governor Leonata (Mariah Stolpa). The affections of our couples are tested when the jealous and spiteful Don John (James Carstens) circulates nasty rumors based on mistaken identities. Indeed, much ado is made over nothing when the wedding of Claudio and Hero falls apart, and, at the request of Beatrice, Benedick nearly turns on his best friend. But all is not lost! The dizzying constable Dogberry (John Powell) and his slapstick assistant Verges (Ariel Staum), along with a sorry troop of hapless guards, inadvertently uncover Don John's plot and save the day. Everyone goes home with a smile. You will too!
With a clever blend of wit and energy, the play is a celebration of love, redemption, and the joy of second chances. For those intimidated by Shakespeare, this text has been lovingly reduced to preserve the spirit of Shakespeare while making the story accessible to a modern audience. Performances are February 29, March 1, & March 2 at 7 PM with a March 2 matinee at 2 PM.
A first for the Playhouse, a dinner-theatre performance will be held prior to the February 29th performance as a fundraiser for the North Crawford Senior trip to New York City. In keeping with the Italian setting of the play, Mediterranean-themed entrees will be served along with fresh garden salad and breadsticks. Don’t miss it! Tickets for the dinner-theatre and other performances may be purchased online (northcrawfordplayhouse.com) or at the North Crawford High School office. Support the arts! Support our students! Come see this wonderful show!
